As simple as it is to send a large parcel with Latitude, we want you to be as prepared as possible for the big send off. Let us walk you through 10 easy preparation and precaution tips that you’ll need to establish before you send your parcel off with us.

10 Tips

  1. Pay attention to the size, weight, and shape of your box. If you were looking to ship an oversized parcel, you need to make sure the box is strong enough, and it fits properly to ensure it has maximum durable protection while in transit.
  2. For added extra protection, fill the inside of the parcel with things like inflatable bags, packing peanuts, crumpled paper, bubble wrap, or thermocol. By doing this, it keeps the movement at a minimum whilst in transit.
  3. Once you’ve lined your box with the added protection, be sure to secure the entire parcel with packing tape. Avoid masking tape, as this doesn’t offer much support. Instead, use heavy duty duct tape with proper adhesive or something similar to that.
  4. Secure any necessary shipping labels, and/or customs documents tightly to the package.
  5. If items inside are fragile, or delicate, protect the contents of the box with a strong exterior box or container.
  6. To prevent any damage to your parcel, wrap each item inside of the parcel individually. This could be achieved by using bubble wrap, Sellotape and/or newspaper to tightly wrap and secure your fragile contents.
  7. Be careful if you’re reusing old packaging. Through every journey, cardboard becomes weaker and weaker, which leads to less protection for your parcel. Having confidence in your box, will help protect your goods.
  8. What exactly is considered large? Well, while there’s no specific classification for large goods. Things that need to be shipped on a pallet is usually placed within this category. Shipping furniture can be extremely risky. We do not recommend shipping furniture unless they have been palletised. Other large fragile household goods, such as glass tables, large ceramic items, or basins are not very suitable for transportation by courier unless they have been professionally palletised and packaged.
  9. Having knowledge, and a good understanding of how to package and send off large parcels, can mean you’re not as restricted when transporting oversized items.
  10. We can always help you to the best of our ability when it comes to preparing your shipment of any size, and rest assured, your packages are in reliable hands and on a safe route to their final destination!

Hopefully our tips have answered any questions you had.

With Christmas and New Year hot on the approach, it’s easy to assume that there will be a huge spike in demand for all kinds of products and services. We’re all getting ready buying gifts for loved ones, and it’s likely many of you are already stocking up on food and drink for the festive period!

However, news appears to be rife suggesting that we can expect shortages – both on our supermarket shelves, but in warehouses, too. There are a number of big reasons for this – and while we may not be in the exact same position as last Christmas, 2024 poses its own new challenges and problems.

The UK Press Using Clickbait

Don’t worry – industry experts are advising that stocks are unlikely to be as catastrophic as much of the UK press is reporting. Here at Latitude, we will be working hard to make sure that we continue delivering products and completing important chains across this busy period. While there are none of us who can see into the future, there are checks and measures in place to ensure people get a fair share of what they want and need.

Home Delivery Demands As High As Ever

There has been a perfect storm for couriers and their customers this year. Not only has COVID-19 continued to push up home delivery demands, Brexit has led to a mass shortage of EU national drivers who can help carry increasing loads.

Press reports suggest that there may be a shortage of more than 100,000 drivers to help courier and deliver items across the UK. That’s official data from the Road Haulage Association. Therefore, it’s hard to ignore that there are problems in the UK’s courier chains right now. However, firms such as ours have been working hard to prepare for the festive season – as always – in light of driver shortages and increasing demand. The fact is, Latitude has been preparing for Christmas 2024 since Christmas 2023!

What’s Happens Next?

It is all about being cautious. Various retailers across the UK, not just supermarkets, are preparing their customers in case of the worst case scenario – and it is absolutely worth doing. Shrewd customers will hopefully have already made clear plans to try and get stocked up for the festive season already. However, it is still worth keeping in mind news in the press with a pinch of salt!

Here at Latitude, you can always be sure that we will have your best interests at heart – and that means getting prepared for busy periods during extremely difficult times such as these. We’re here to support you across Christmas, into 2022 and beyond.

Have a very happy Christmas and an even better New Year – and remember to keep calm – there will be a solution to all your shopping concerns!

When it comes to the proper handling of your package, please make sure that you follow these simple packing tips to help your goods travel safely along its designated shipping route. By following these guidelines, it will not only help get your parcel delivered on time, but it will also assist in making the process hassle-free for those all around.

17 Packaging Tips

1.Package your goods in a sturdy inner AND outer box to ensure full protection.

2.To prevent damage, around all of the edges of your boxes and envelopes, secure a strong tape to seal them securely.

3.When shipping your goods, try to use corrugated cardboard boxes (the newer the box, the better!)

4.Don’t forget that it is your responsibility to increase the protection, and reduce the chances of your items being damaged during transit, so make sure you pack everything as best as possible to decrease the risks of any unexpected issues.

5.If items are fragile, or there’s a lot of empty space in the box, consider packaging goods in polystyrene, foam, and bubble wrap to help prevent excess movement inside of the box.

6.Be sure that the address details are correct, and to prevent smudging, or water damage, make sure the customs documents are fastened securely.

7.Any musical instruments that you wish to send, should travel in a sturdy, and hard case. With that being said, trapezoid cardboard guitar boxes and gig bags aren’t suitable for this.

8.Avoid using jiffy bags or soft cases when packaging and sending tablets, smart phones, laptops, or any similar fragile electrical items.

9.Don’t strap parcels together. Try to package everything within the same, and if needed, send the parcels separately.

10.The size and weight of the items being posted plays a big role in what type of packaging you use; therefore packaging needs to always be of a suitable thickness and strength.

11.String, shrink wrap, bubble wrap, and plastic wrapping can get stuck in our machines… NEVER use it to package the outside of your parcels.

12.Put the delivery labels in a clear plastic envelope and seal it to an easy-to-access handle or strap on the item. Avoid attaching labels using glue, because these can easily become detached.

13.Avoid “polystyrene peanuts” as they don’t offer much protection, and flat or small items can easily slide between them on route.

14.Use an appropriate amount of sealant tape, to avoid your box coming open when being transferred.

15.Don’t place labels across a closure or seam, just in case the package is required to be opened for any necessary reason.

16.It is highly recommended that you include a return address and contact details within your parcel, in case you need to be contacted, in the unlikely event of a package breakage.

17.We recommend measuring and weighing your parcel once it’s fully packaged to ensure it’s within our guidelines. If the parcel is heavier or bigger than what you stated on your booking, you could potentially face extra charges from us.
